Ken Fritz is an American former professional basketball player and coach. He was born on November 21, 1957 in San Francisco, California. He attended the University of California, Berkeley, where he played college basketball for the Golden Bears. Fritz was drafted by the San Diego Clippers in the fourth round of the 1979 NBA Draft. He played for the Clippers for two seasons before being traded to the New Jersey Nets in 1981. He played for the Nets for two seasons before retiring in 1983. Fritz then began his coaching career, serving as an assistant coach for the Nets from 1983 to 1985. He then served as an assistant coach for the Los Angeles Lakers from 1985 to 1987. He then served as the head coach of the Golden State Warriors from 1987 to 1988. Fritz then served as an assistant coach for the Phoenix Suns from 1988 to 1989. He then served as the head coach of the Sacramento Kings from 1989 to 1992. He then served as an assistant coach for the Seattle SuperSonics from 1992 to 1994. Fritz then served as the head coach of the Vancouver Grizzlies from 1995 to 1997. He then served as an assistant coach for the Dallas Mavericks from 1997 to 1999. He then served as the head coach of the Los Angeles Clippers from 1999 to 2000. Fritz is currently the head coach of the Santa Cruz Warriors of the NBA G League. Fritz played and lettered for the Ohio State Buckeyes football team under coaches Woody Hayes during the 1976, 1977 and 1978 seasons and Earle Bruce in the 1979 season. He made All-Big Ten team in both the 1978 and 1979 seasons. At the end of the 1978 season Fritz restrained his coach Woody Hayes after he punched Clemson linebacker Charlie Bauman of Clemson University in the Gator Bowl. The television replay and several still photos also show Hayes punching Fritz as he restrained him, but Fritz at the time denied that he was punched. Fritz said “…He was just trying to wrestle his way free. He didn’t want anyone to restrain him.” In 1979, his senior season, he helped the Buckeyes to a Big Ten championship with a perfect 11-0 regular season record, and a berth in the Rose Bowl. Following his senior year, as a 6-foot, 3-inch, 238-pound guard, he was recognized as a consensus first-team All-American, having received first-team honors from several publications and organizations including the Associated Press (AP), and United Press International (UPI). Fritz was drafted by the Pittsburgh Steelers in the 10th round (277 overall selection) of the 1980 NFL Draft.
